The return of serve is the most underrated shot in pickleball. A high-quality return must be deep and aggressive, forcing the server to hit their third shot while moving backward or reaching. Targeting the middle (the 'T' or the center line) reduces the opponentβs lateral angles, making it statistically harder for them to hit an effective third shot drop.
Technical Execution
Focus on a 'split-step' immediately after your return. Many players remain static after hitting the return, losing precious milliseconds as they transition to the net. Your goal is to maximize depth (landing within 2 feet of the baseline) to push the opponent out of their comfort zone.
- Drill 1: Baseline Depth Drills: Partner serves from the baseline; return every ball to land within the last three feet of the opponent's side.
- Drill 2: The Middle Target: Place a marker on the center line at the opponent's baseline. Hit 30 returns aiming exclusively for this marker to practice precision under pressure.
Common Pitfalls
Trying to hit winners off the return is a high-risk, low-reward strategy. Focus on depth and consistency. Another common error is failing to anticipate the speed of the serve, resulting in late preparation. Develop a 'ready stance' that allows for rapid recovery and split-step timing.
