The Art of Simultaneous Group Management

Middle game success is rarely about the survival of a single group, but rather the synchronization of multiple weak groups. In a complex fight, you must transition from 'local survival' to 'global efficiency.' This guide focuses on moving multiple groups without compromising your territorial foundation.

  • Group Synchronization: The professional approach is to identify which group is the 'anchor' and which is the 'expendable.' By tethering your weaker stones to your opponent's potentially weak groups, you force the opponent to defend while you advance.
  • Tempo and Timing: Understanding when to switch focus is crucial. If your opponent pursues a single group, do not just defend. Create a 'forcing move' on a distant group to gain sente, then return to defend the original group.
  • Professional Training Drill: Review professional games from the mid-game phase. Identify every move that influences two or more groups simultaneously. Calculate how many moves each player spent on purely local defensive tasks versus those that had dual-purpose functionality.

Avoid the 'passive defense' trap. Many amateurs suffer by responding to every move the opponent plays. In the middle game, efficiency is gained by finding the 'tenuki' that forces a result elsewhere before returning to address local issues.
