Defending from the Small Blind (SB) is inherently challenging due to the lack of positional advantage. Modern theory suggests that we must play a mix of 3-betting and folding, but constructing a valid flat-calling range—though limited—is necessary to prevent the Big Blind from squeezing and to capitalize on multi-way pot odds.

Tactical Application

When defending from the SB, your range must be constructed with high raw equity and playability. Focus on suited connectors, suited broadways, and small-to-medium pairs. These hands perform well when realizing equity across multiple streets. Flat-calling should be prioritized against smaller open sizes (2x-2.2x) where pot odds are favorable. Avoid calling with weak off-suit hands that lack the ability to hit the board strongly.
