Bridge tactics shift dramatically based on scoring. In IMPs (International Matchpoints), the priority is contract safety. You are willing to concede small overtricks to ensure you do not go down in a makeable contract. In Matchpoints, however, the priority is the extra trick; you must play for every possible point, even if it introduces risk.
Tactical Application
At IMPs, safety plays are paramount. If a 3-2 break in trumps is likely but a 4-1 is possible, you play to cover the 4-1 scenario if it doesn't sacrifice the contract. Conversely, in Matchpoints, you take the line with the highest percentage, even if it results in a 'bottom' board if it fails. Defense also changes: at IMPs, you lead passively to avoid giving away tricks. At Matchpoints, you lead actively—seeking to set the contract, even at the cost of potential overtricks.
Professional Training Drills
- Scoring Sensitivity Drill: Play the same set of 12 boards twice: once with IMP scoring criteria and once with Matchpoint scoring criteria. Compare the different choices made at every turn.
- Risk Mitigation Exercise: Take boards where you scored poorly and re-examine if the risk taken was commensurate with the scoring format.
Common Errors
The most egregious error is 'IMPs play at Matchpoints' or vice versa. A conservative player will never win at Matchpoints because they fail to fight for the extra trick. A reckless player will destroy their team's IMP score by over-striving for a non-existent overtrick and losing the contract.
